The OnePlus 15 and OnePlus 16 already boast higher refresh-rate displays than most of the competition, at 165Hz and 185Hz, respectively. But the OnePlus 17 is said to go even further, with a 240Hz display on the cards.
This new info on the OnePlus 17 comes from leaker Smart Pikachu on Weibo, who claims that OnePlus is testing a 240Hz display panel, possibly for the OnePlus 17. This would make sense, as OnePlus told us during our briefing for the OnePlus 15 that their focus moving forward would be on higher-refresh-rate displays.
While this is still only being tested, we could still see it coming next year. Keep in mind that OnePlus launched the 16 in China less than a month ago. So we still have about a year before the OnePlus 17 is available.
OnePlus wouldn’t be first with a 240Hz display
Surprisingly, OnePlus wouldn’t be the first to offer a 240Hz display on a smartphone. The Sharp Aquos R11, which launched earlier this year, also had a 240Hz refresh rate display, though it is much smaller at 6.5 inches.
Sharp achieved this with interpolation. Basically, you get the same 120Hz display, but between each real frame it produces, it also inserts a black frame, which adds up to 240Hz. Hopefully this is native 240Hz, and knowing OnePlus, it will be.
The big problem with these high-refresh-rate displays is that very few games and apps actually support them. On the OnePlus 15, the list of games that supported 165Hz was pretty short; it was really just a handful. Even the games OnePlus advertised as running above 120Hz didn’t actually perform higher in real-world testing. So while it’s a cool spec-sheet addition, it won’t really make much of a difference for consumers, unfortunately. But we’ll have to wait and see.
