The Motorola Signature 27 is getting 7 years of updates, but the way Motorola has it worded is reportedly concerning for some prospective buyers. Motorola’s phones have never had a promise of updates that would extend out this far, and that’s one of the main things that sets it apart from other Motorola flagships of yore. A whole 7 years of updates is something that rivals like Google and Samsung already offer, and it’s why many choose to go with those devices.
Motorola on the other hand, typically updates phones with two or three major OS updates and then delivers just a few years of security updates. On the software side its phones get left behind. Motorola is shifting things in Google and Samsung’s direction with this new phone, but there is one specific part that stands out.
The Motorola Signature 27 will have software support for “up to” 7 years
Those two little words, “up to,” are reportedly what have some users concerned. As noted by Android Authority, the use of the words up to is giving the impression to customers that it may not be a full 7 years of OS updates, which would be 7 whole OS updates if there was one every single year. Just like Google and Samsung offers.
This two-word term is used to reference both the 7 years of OS updates and the 7 years of security updates, the latter of which Motorola says will be issued to the device on a bi-monthly basis. The question from users on Reddit is whether or not Motorola will actually push out updates for 7 years. The wording says one thing but implies another and gives Motorola room to adjust things as needed. Other comments are questioning if it really matters whether or not 7 years of OS updates hit the device, arguing that many people will end up moving into a new phone every few years anyway.
