The PS6 handheld will reportedly have expandable storage, mimicking the storage methods of handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally X20, ,Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch 2, and other gaming portables by using a microSD card for additional space to download games. The handheld will also reportedly come with an internal NVMe SSD for internal storage.
The PS6 and the PS6 handheld are both believed to be Sony’s next-generation console hardware. Sony has not confirmed either of these at the moment by name, but has made statements regarding the next PlayStation console without referring to it by the official market name that it will be called when it launches. That being said, even without Sony’s official announcements about either one, many reports have surfaced over the past year about the rumors of Sony’s plans to launch a handheld alongside the PS6. It’s believed that the PS6 handheld is to be an alternative solution to PS6 gen gaming, and that it would be coming as a less expensive option. Additionally, past reports have suggested that it will be dockable as well as playable in a handheld mode similar to the Switch 2.
PS6 handheld expandable storage will be fast SD storage
In the most recent Broken Silicon podcast from Moore’s Law Is Dead, it’s stated that Sony will use fast SD storage for the expandable storage on the PS6 handheld. It isn’t mentioned specifically, but this suggests that it will be microSD Express cards, which is what the Nintendo Switch 2 uses exclusively to ensure that games load fast. Then again, microSD Express cards aren’t cheap either.
In the podcast, Moore’s Law is Dead also mentions that the NVMe SSD inside the handheld likely won’t be upgradable. So the intention there is that Sony will be able to avoid the increased SSD costs that have been circulating since the RAM crisis started.
