One of the nifty features of Google Photos is that it allows users to combine multiple photos and turn them into an animated GIF. Yea, we know it’s kind of a novel feature, but some people might appreciate it. Now, it looks like Google Photos is giving users more control over the animations.
Animations in Google Photos now offer speed options
According to an APK teardown by Android Authority, animations in Google Photos will soon offer speed options. You see, right now when you create an animation, the speed is set/fixed. This means that you can make the animations between the frames shorter or longer.
However, Android Authority discovered in the latest version of the app (v7.96.0.99) that Google will soon give users more options. Users will soon be able to choose speed options of 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, or 2x. This means that you can make the animation slower or faster, which might be useful in some cases.
You could always use third-party apps or services to turn your photos into animations with control over the speed. But if you’d rather not hop around between apps, or in some cases pay to access these features, then this is an update worth keeping an eye out for.Â
In addition to the speed controls, there are strings in the app that suggest GIFs created in Google Photos will be saved directly in the camera roll. They will also be backed up to Google Photos, so you can access them in the cloud or other devices. Just make sure both devices are signed into the same Google account.
When is it coming?
Unfortunately as is the case with most APK teardowns, it’s hard to say when it will go live. APK teardowns serve as a way for us to get a better insight as to what Google could be working on. However, there are times when Google might scrap an idea before it even hits the public.
Internal testing could find that it doesn’t work as well as intended, or Google changed their mind. That’s why we don’t know when these new animation speed controls will arrive for Google Photos. However, we’ll keep our eyes peeled and hopefully it will arrive sooner rather than later.
