Getting people to click on a website link from Google is getting harder by the day. Analytics firm Chartbeat just published its 2026 Publisher Playbook, revealing that Google Search referral traffic to news and media sites tumbled by a massive 40.2% between July 2025 and July 2026.
That is a huge jump compared to the previous year, when search referrals dropped by 21.9%. Google Discover took an even bigger hit, seeing its decline steepen from 6.6% in year one to 34.3% in year two. Across Chartbeat’s network—which focuses mainly on news organizations—Google Search fell from driving 9% of all pageviews in July 2024 to just 5% in July 2026, marking a 46% relative drop over two years (via Search Engine Journal).
AI summaries swallow clicks while dark social takes off
The report points straight to AI-generated search overviews as the main reason clicks are disappearing. Simple, generic articles suffer the most because AI answers solve the user’s question directly on the search results page without sending a click outward.
Even so, overall pageviews across Chartbeat’s network held relatively steady at 31.1 billion monthly, down only slightly from 32 billion in 2025. That is because readers are changing how they share content. Traffic from “dark social”—links passed around in private texts, DMs, and messaging apps—surged from 7.1% to 11.3% of total pageviews over two years. Direct traffic grew from 13.5% to 15.9%, and internal site links rose from 37.9% to 40.4%.
AI chatbots do not drive traffic, but loyal readers save the day
If media companies were hoping AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, or Gemini would replace lost Google clicks, the data brings a cold reality check. AI referrals account for a tiny 0.01% of all publisher traffic, with referral numbers actually slipping downward throughout 2026 despite ChatGPT leading the pack. Smaller outlets have been hit hardest, with earlier data from Axios showing small publishers losing up to 60% of search referrals over two years.
In the end, it is loyal readers keeping digital news outlets alive. Chartbeat defines a loyal visitor as someone who visits a site at least eight out of sixteen days. That core audience held steady at 15.02 billion monthly pageviews, helping balance out a 14% drop in new readers and an 8% drop in returning visitors.
