Back on September 24, it was reported that the Pixel Recorder app would soon be getting the capability to access your recordings in a folder outside of the app in alternative app options like File Explorer and Files by Google, as references of that function had been discovered in the 4.2.2 version of the app, although they weren’t working at that time.
Following Google’s push of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 6.1 on September 29, the Pixel Recorder app also received an update that will now let users access recordings from other file applications. The update pushes the app to version 4.2.20260823.x, and started rolling out widely to users on September 30. Google also updated the app icon recently to make the sound wave red on a white icon background.
The Pixel Recorder ‘Recordings’ folder is enabled by default
This feature is enabled by default after updating the app to the correct version, but users can turn it off if they don’t want access to be available outside of the Recorder app. Doing so would of course make it impossible to see those recordings in a Files app, but that also presents an extra layer of security for those that want it. And seeing as this is a toggle, users can simply re-enable access to these recordings at any point in time.
While this is on by default, it won’t go unnoticed by users that want to disable outside access. As soon as you open the Pixel Recorder app following this update, there’s a notification at the top of the screen that tells you the feature is active, so you’ll know it’s there and can turn it off if you wish to do so. Leaving it enabled, however, allows you to more easily access and share these recordings with others if that’s your goal.
