The Xbox disc to digital feature has started rolling out to Xbox owners this week, making it possible for gamers to bring their physical library forward to future consoles. The Xbox team made an official announcement about the rollout on X on September 29, stating that all users would be able to access this feature soon. While the company didn’t mention specific times in its post, it does state in the comments that users should check back if they don’t see the feature right away.
The Xbox disc to digital feature has been available for at least a few weeks for Xbox Insiders, who have had early access to it for testing purposes, allowing Xbox to make any adjustments if needed. The feature was announced back on August 27, and is a means of allowing players to take the licenses of their physical games and apply them to digital versions so they don’t have to purchase them again. In the wake of Sony’s announcement to stop putting out disc-based games in 2028, this was a welcomed announcement for Xbox owners.
How to claim Xbox disc to digital licenses
Claiming a digital license for a disc version of a game you own can be a tedious process if you have a large collection, but claiming a license for those games one by one doesn’t require much effort, only time. To claim a digital license, players have to insert a disc into their Xbox and play the game while signed into your Xbox account. This will give players the digital license for that game.
Xbox has also set up a method for claiming digital licenses for disc games in bulk, which it says speeds up the process a little bit. To start, Xbox owners will need to press the Xbox button, go to profile & system, then settings, then devices & connections, then disc. In this menu there will be a box that says “play disc automatically.” Uncheck that, then go back to the home menu, insert a disc, highlight the game box art, hit the menu button, click on “get digital license,” and then select claim.
There will be a notification that says your license was claimed. Then you can move on by ejecting that disc and inserting another one. Once claimed, you can also play these games on PC if they’re supported by ‘Play Anywhere.’
