Earlier this week, we reported that iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max owners were experiencing a Face ID bug that basically caused their phones to crash and reboot. The good news is that Apple has since acknowledged the iPhone 18 Pro reboot bug and is issuing a fix as early as next week.
iPhone 18 Pro reboot bug fix incoming
Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that the iPhone 18 Pro reboot bug fix is on the way as a software update. According to Apple, it should arrive early next week. The company hasn’t said which version of iOS 27 will include it. But MacRumors spotted Apple testing iOS 27.0.1, which makes it the most likely candidate.
The confirmation of a software patch should also be a relief to some. This is because some owners had already swapped their phones at Apple, thinking the hardware was faulty. Since Apple is handling this with software, there’s no need for that. Until the iPhone 18 Pro reboot bug fix arrives, you can keep using your phone as usual. Just know that it might crash again if Face ID fails inside an app.
What happened?
It should be noted that this bug doesn’t seem to affect all iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max owners. There are comments on social media where users say they have no issue with their devices. However, a bug that can cause a phone, and a brand new one at that, to crash and reboot is still pretty serious.
For those who missed our previous report, basically what happened is that this Face ID bug kicks in when users try to access protected apps, like Passwords, protected notes in the Notes app, and so on. If the first attempt to scan the user’s face fails, users found that their phone basically froze and did not respond to touch. After a few seconds, the phone would crash and reboot.
9to5Mac tested this out themselves and was able to replicate it. Either way, hopefully this will be a nonissue once Apple releases a fix for it.
