New details have emerged for the PS6 handheld, which is rumored to now come with a similar amount of performance to the PS5 Pro console, and come equipped with a Docked Mode that allows the chipset inside the handheld to clock at a higher frequency for additional performance power.
Sony has not officially announced the PS6 or the PS6 handheld, currently rumored to be called Project Canis internally, but rumors about the handheld have been floating around for months, and new details suggest that it might be close to the PS5 Pro in terms of performance, though not quite on the same level. According to the report from GameGPU, the handheld will support 540p base rendering, which isn’t exactly PS5 Pro levels, but the close match comes from the rumored PSSR 3.0 support.
The PS6 handheld will support PSSR 3.0 and feature a docked mode with high APU clock speeds
While 540p isn’t what you would expect from PS5 Pro resolution quality, the PS6 handheld will have own display that is quite small compared to a large TV or monitor. GameGPU also reports that the handheld will support PSSR 3.0, and this will boost the performance to near PS5 Pro levels, with 14 TFLOPs of power while in docked mode, and up to 11 TFLOPs in handheld mode. Without PSSR 3.0, the TFLOPs are considerably lower at 6.75 and 4.91, respectively.
For comparison, the PS5 Pro has 16.7 TFLOPs. PSSR 3.0 is also said to push the resolution up to 1080p. Additionally, the handheld is said to have a custom AMD Canis APU with clock speeds of up to 1.65GHz when docked. The report also states that Sony is planning to launch this device in late 2027, which has been previously rumored as an expected timeline for release for both this and the main PS6 console. However, some earlier rumors have suggested that Sony would push this launch date back.
