NVIDIA is the world’s biggest supplier of AI chips, but it seems that Huawei doesn’t plan to sit back and do nothing about it. During a recent company event in Shanghai, rotating chairman David Wang essentially laid out Huawei 2027 AI chip plans with NVIDIA in their sights.
Huawei AI chip plan for 2027 targets NVIDIA
According to Wang, he says that Huawei has two new AI chips in the works for 2027. They are the 960DT and the Ascend 960PR. The 960DT is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2027, while the Ascend 960PR will arrive in the third quarter of the year.
Now, as potentially powerful as these chips might be, they are only a single chip. It will not be enough to run more advanced AI programs. That is why Huawei is leaning on its UnifiedBus technology. This creates what Huawei calls “superclusters,” which are basically AI chips linked together to share information and work more efficiently.
However, the more important question is, are Huawei AI chip plans for 2027 enough to edge out NVIDIA? Or at least allow them to gain a bigger market share? That remains to be seen, but Huawei does have some advantages.
The China advantage
If any other company in the world were to be cut off from the US market, it would spell doom for them. However, Huawei has an advantage and that is the Chinese market. Despite being banned from the US and other parts of the world, Huawei is thriving in China.
This is why if Huawei’s new AI chips are as good as they claim, they stand a real chance against NVIDIA. NVIDIA has been going around snapping up other AI companies, but if there’s one market they haven’t fully conquered, it would be China. This is because of the ongoing trade war between the US and China.
On one side, the US government has restricted NVIDIA from exporting its more powerful chips to China. And over in China, the government has urged companies to curb reliance on foreign hardware. This means that all Huawei needs to do is create chips that can rival NVIDIA’s current offerings in China. If they can do that, there would be less reason to buy NVIDIA’s hardware over Huawei’s.
