Just the other day, Samsung officially ended support for its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 smartphones. Well, for those who own the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, your devices are up next. This is because Samsung has moved both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 to quarterly updates.
Galaxy Z Fold 4, Flip 4 move to quarterly updates
Why is this important, you might ask? Like a lot of companies, Samsung promises its phones will get a guaranteed number of years of updates at the bare minimum. Sometimes we are pleasantly surprised when it goes beyond that, but there is a minimum timeframe. However, towards the end of that period, updates become less frequent. They don’t stop, but they’re not being pushed out monthly anymore.
In the case of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 moving to quarterly updates means that Samsung is preparing users for the phone’s official end-of-life. Don’t worry, you still have about a year left before official support ends. Samsung says that these updates will keep coming until 2027. However, note that these are security updates. Major Android OS updates are no longer on the table.
We wouldn’t be surprised if there are many users still holding onto these devices. Given how much they cost, especially the Fold 4, it is understandable you might want to try and squeeze out as much life from the phone as possible.Â
What’s next?
Another thing we want to mention is that even after official support ends, your phone is still usable. It just means that it will no longer receive security updates. It also means if you plan to keep using your phone, you might have to take extra precautions because newer malware or vulnerabilities will not be patched.
You should of course take precautions anyway, but without official Samsung support, it might feel open season for some users. There are times when a flaw or vulnerability is too severe, where companies patch older devices, but we wouldn’t hold our breath. In the meantime, Samsung just announced its latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 phones.Â
Those might be worth checking out if you are thinking of upgrading. The upside here is that for Samsung’s newer devices, the company is promising seven years of updates. This is longer than the four years promised to the Fold 4 and Flip 4.
