Tech products like smartphones and smartwatches typically come with a fixed software update policy. Samsung has a clear update policy for its Galaxy devices, and once a device reaches the end of its promised support period, the company generally stops rolling out major software updates, with the exception of occasional security fixes. After five years of updates, Samsung has finally pulled the plug on the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic.
Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic will no longer receive software updates
The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic debuted in 2021. They marked the return of Wear OS on Samsung Galaxy Watches. In fact, they were the first to show off the re-launch of Google’s wearable platform that both brands co-developed. After five good years of receiving software updates, they’ve now reached the end of their support.
Samsung has officially removed both the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic from their mobile security support site. The watches received updates in late June and again in August. However, they are no longer expected to get any more software updates going forward.
The final builds for each smartwatch are: Galaxy Watch 4: R865USQS2JZG3 (40mm)/R875USQS2JZG3 (44mm) and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic: R885USQS2JZG3 (42mm)/R895USQS2JZG3 (46mm).
You can always upgrade
You can continue rocking the Galaxy Watch 4 series if you own them and they’re working absolutely fine. But it’s worth noting that they’ll no longer receive software updates. So you’ll be missing out on any new features that will arrive with future versions of the OS. You can always upgrade to a newer model if having the latest features is a must.
The Samsung mobile security site currently lists the latest Galaxy Watch 9, Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic, Watch Ultra, Watch 7, Watch FE, Watch 6, Watch 6 Classic, and Watch 5 series models.
