Samsung is finally bringing the convenience of seamless updates to its wearables with the Galaxy Watch 9. It is now the first Galaxy smartwatch to get this neat addition. If you’re feeling lost, well, it’s a feature that lets new firmware install in the background before the watch restarts. This means updates can finally be less disruptive and more convenient.

Going back a bit, seamless updates first arrived with Android Nougat, which was a decade ago. But Samsung, for some reason, took years to adopt it. The Galaxy A55 was the first Samsung device to support it, with the Galaxy S25 extending it to flagships. The company is now extending the same convenience to smartwatches. This reduces the downtime when installing updates.
Several users on X spotted (via) the feature in the Galaxy Watch 9’s first software update since launch. The update included an August 2025 security patch. While installing it, users found that the watch can now download and install the new firmware in the background while they continue using it.
It may not be a flashy new feature, but it’s a useful addition. Especially since they make software updates far less disruptive, as said. Without seamless updates, a device usually becomes unusable when installing updates. This process forces you to wait until it’s completed. With seamless updates, the entire thing happens in the background while you continue using it. Once everything is ready, simply restart it to finish the update.
Old-gen models will not support it
Interestingly, Samsung hasn’t made a big deal out of this. In fact, it isn’t listed among the Watch 9’s key features. Users had to discover it themselves when installing the firmware update. It’s entirely possible the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 could be next. This is considering it launched alongside the Watch 9 (review) and possibly shares the same update architecture. But we can’t say for certain, though.Â
That said, Samsung can’t bring this to older Galaxy Watches through updates. Seamless updates rely on the device’s hardware-level and storage-level architecture. This won’t change with an update. What this means is that previous Galaxy Watches will not gain the feature.
