Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max smartphones will look largely the same as its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. However, the biggest changes are taking place under the hood. Namely its chipset, which is made using TSMC’s 2nm process. Now, in a post shared on X by tipster Abhishek Yadav, details of the Apple A20 Pro have been revealed.

By now it’s no secret that the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra foldable iPhone will be powered by the A20 Pro. But for those who are curious as to what changed over the A19 Pro, Yadav shared some details on the Apple A20 Pro chipset.
For starters, it seems that Apple is keeping to the 6-core CPU configuration. It will continue to use 2 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. We don’t know what the clock speeds are for the cores. However, the upgrade to TSMC’s 2nm process should, on paper, result in better performance.
It’s interesting to see that Apple is still sticking with a 6-core design. Competitors like Qualcomm and Samsung are making chipsets with 8-10 cores. However, in all fairness, Apple designed both the hardware and software. This gives the company more flexibility on what it can do.
Another interesting change is to the GPU. The A19 Pro came with a 6-core GPU, but the A20 Pro has added one more core, making it a 7-core configuration. Some obvious benefits of this is for gaming, but another possibility is for AI. Especially when paired with the 8MB L2 cache and 96-bit LPDDR5X memory interface, all of which should increase memory bandwidth, which is usually a bottleneck when running LLMs on mobile devices.
Plus, with the revamped Apple Intelligence, it makes sense.
Only for Pro models
That being said, it’s worth noting that the improvements we’re seeing in the A20 Pro could be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro models and the iPhone Ultra. Just like last year, Apple reserved the A19 Pro for its higher-end flagships, while the lower-end models got the normal A19 chip.
We expect this will be the same for the base iPhone 18, which will use the regular A20. We don’t know what the main differences are yet. But based on the A19 versus A19 Pro, the regular A20 could feature a smaller L2 and system cache, less RAM, and a GPU with fewer cores.
This is just speculation on our part, so take it with a grain of salt.
