Samsung could end up ditching the 3x and 5x telephoto cameras on the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Instead, it could go with a larger 4x telephoto lens — which Samsung fans will say was copied from the iPhone, which added 4x last year on the iPhone 17 Pro series.
Apparently, Samsung is testing a 4x telephoto with a 1/1.9-inch sensor. That is considerably larger than what is on the Galaxy S26 Ultra right now (1/2.52-inch). This means it would offer better low-light performance and capture more detail.
X user @phonefuturist also mentioned that this is being tested specifically for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Meaning that it’s not a sensor that they might sell to other brands – keep in mind that Samsung makes a lot of components that they sell to other phone brands, including RAM, storage, batteries, and even camera sensors.
Take this rumor with a grain of salt
Two things are important to keep in mind here: just because Samsung is testing something doesn’t mean it will make it into the final product. With every phone, Samsung (and other phone makers) try out different things in many different prototypes. Not everything ends up in the final version, though.
The other thing is, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is still about 6 months away. So things can change between now and Unpacked. Just because there are rumors of a massive telephoto camera upgrade doesn’t mean they’ll happen. Though it does look like they are moving back to a triple-camera setup, away from the quad-camera setup we’ve had for a while, based on the CADs we published last week.
Right now, the Galaxy S27 series is expected to be announced in February. Though, Samsung could decide to move back to a January launch next year. It’s slated to be announced again the week before Mobile World Congress.
