Samsung storage products like NVMe SSDs and portable external SSDs are among the list of devices that have shot up in price considerably since the memory crisis began, and that isn’t changing with the new P9 and P7 portable SSDs that Samsung has officially unveiled this week during Gamescom. While these aren’t specifically designed for gaming, either one of them could be used for gaming alongside other things like photo and video storage.
Both new drives feature USB4 support for connectivity and offer read and write speed that are more than suitable for just about type of data transfers. Specifically, the P9 has read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s. That’s essentially double what the read and write speeds are for the T9 SSD, which were up to 2,000MB/s. Basically, these are designed to really up the speeds of your workflow, and are capable of supporting “12K direct recording for professional workflows,” Samsung says.
The Samsung P9 SSD can cost up to $2,699.99 if you go with the 8TB model
If you needed any more proof that prices on storage devices aren’t going down anytime soon, the release of the 8TB Samsung P9 SSD is that proof. This is the most expensive variant of this drive and it retails for $2,699.99. You can get it in as little of a capacity as 1TB, which retails for $339.99.
If you’re willing to slide a bit on features, the more standard SSD for everyday storage needs, the P7, starts at $289.99 for a 1TB drive and goes up to $2,289.99 for the 8TB. The P7 doesn’t support the 12K direct recording, but it does offer the same read and write speeds as the P9. Samsung says both SSDs will roll out to consumers globally beginning in September.
