Here come all of the passport-shaped foldables. After Samsung had great success with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 last month and the iPhone Ultra is launching next month, we’re starting to see some Chinese OEMs follow suit.
Xiaomi is preparing to launch the 18 Fold, which has nothing to do with the iPhone, right? And we’re starting to see some new images of this device. It looks a lot like the original Google Pixel Fold, with the triple camera setup in a bar across the back.
The device looks fairly thin, though not the thinnest. It could be similar in thickness to the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is about 4.5mm when unfolded.
Xiaomi has already confirmed this will launch in September
Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi has already confirmed that its 18 Fold will launch in September, likely very close to the iPhone’s announcement. It will also be the first phone to use Xiaomi’s own XRING O3 chip. Xiaomi has been developing its own chips, but this will be the first to use an XRING chip outside China.
The XRING O3 is a very promising chip that has apparently scored 5.22 million points on AnTuTu. For reference, most Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 devices score around 4 million (most are closer to 3.8-3.9 million). The XRING O3 also uses a 10-core CPU design, with all cores classified as big cores, rather than using both big and small cores.
Xiaomi also claims that this chip has surpassed 15,000 in multi-core testing. This is a 60% improvement over the previous XRING chip. Graphics performance is also no slouch, with the G2-Ultra NX GPU on board. It is claimed to provide an 85% increase in graphics performance while using about 64% less energy.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold could be the second passport-style Android foldable to hit the market.
