Google is slowly rolling out its new Motion Assist feature with Android 17, starting with its own Pixel phones, of course. The feature, as its name suggests, helps users reduce motion sickness when using their phones in a moving vehicle, such as a car, train, or plane.
Android Authority reports that some users have seen Motion Assist on their Pixel phones, though the rollout doesn’t appear to be widespread just yet. The feature is currently appearing on the Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro XL models running Android 17.
What is Motion Assist?
Motion Assist is a feature you can toggle on that automatically detects when you’re in a moving vehicle. The setting specifically calls out a car, bus, or train. Google does let you add this to your Quick Settings, so you can easily change it when needed.
When active, Motion Assist forces Android to display a notification indicating it is running. You can tap the notification to turn it on or off. This feature offers a few customization options, including changing the color, shape, and opacity of the motion indicators, while the randomization option automatically varies these settings for you.
The idea here is to display moving visual cues around the edges of the screen that correspond with the motion of the vehicle you’re in. To help alleviate motion sickness while you’re doomscrolling in a car or on the train to work.
This is likely one of those features that you didn’t know you needed until you try it out. Unfortunately, it’s not available for everyone just yet. It appears that, as usual, Google is rolling out Motion Assist slowly, and the timing can vary depending on when you get the update. It currently only works on Pixel devices running Android 17. There’s no word on it coming to other Android devices that aren’t Pixels.
