Netflix is reportedly considering turning into a one-stop shop for streaming. According to a report from The New York Times, Netflix is considering adding shows and movies from other streaming services. The talks are reportedly underway with Peacock and Fox One to bring their content to Netflix. That’s an interesting development, similar to Amazon Prime Video’s add-on channels, which let users access rival streaming services through its platform.
That said, it’s not clear whether Netflix will sell subscriptions to these services through its app or simply add the content to its service. Either way, this is a big shift away from the company’s usual focus on its own library policy.
Netflix executives have long avoided working with direct competitors, but that seems to be changing now. The report notes that in June the streaming giant added a French broadcaster to its platform for the first time. And it’s holding talks to bring Peacock and Fox One on board. The shift highlights how streaming companies are changing their priorities.
A major shift in strategy
Instead of focusing on gaining new subscribers, streaming services’ immediate goal is to keep existing users watching as much as possible and prevent them from canceling. This has apparently turned the streaming battle from years ago into a new bundling war now. Major services are competing to become the main place where people access all their streaming content.
Considering the report is accurate, Netflix seems to be taking the same route as YouTube. In fact, the Google-owned platform recently partnered with Peacock, giving YouTube Premium subscribers access to NBCUniversal’s streaming service as a perk starting next year.
