Apple usually works with multiple suppliers where possible. This is to reduce the company’s dependency on a single supplier in the event something goes wrong or if prices go up. When it comes to displays, Apple has sourced from companies like Samsung, LG, and BOE. However, for its upcoming OLED MacBook Pro, Apple will source its panels from Samsung exclusively.
Samsung to supply OLED panels for MacBook Pro
According to an exclusive report from Korean publication The Elec, Apple will get the OLED panels for the MacBook Pro from Samsung. This is said to be an exclusive deal, meaning that Apple won’t use its other suppliers like LG or BOE. But this shouldn’t be that surprising.
The report claims that Samsung’s role isn’t just purely as a supplier. It turns out Samsung Display was also involved in the panel’s initial development. So for Apple to name Samsung as the exclusive supplier makes sense. However, it’s worth taking this with a grain of salt for now.
Many companies, especially Apple, do not disclose supplier or supply chain information. This means that it would be almost impossible to confirm, at least until the laptops are released and someone were to conduct a teardown and check the component’s serial number.
Apple’s upcoming laptop
That being said, perhaps the more exciting part of this news is Apple’s long-rumored OLED MacBook Pro. Apple has transitioned its iPhones and some of its iPads to OLED, but its Mac computers have not.
Not only will this be the first OLED MacBook Pro from Apple, but it could also be the first MacBook with a touchscreen display. We’ve heard rumors that Apple could launch the laptop in both 14 and 16-inch sizes. While touchscreen laptops aren’t new, the rumors claim that Apple could actually make some software tweaks to make it more touch-friendly.
The rumors say that macOS will be able to detect touch input. When it does, it will give users a touch-friendly interface. This is versus Windows laptops with touchscreen displays, where the UI still stays the same.
Perhaps this is what could make touchscreen laptops more functional, rather than novel. The upcoming laptop is rumored to launch early 2027. So there’s still a bit of waiting to do before Apple makes it official.
