Don’t get your hopes up for LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage on the Galaxy S27 Ultra next year, given current supply chain issues.
According to tipster Lanzuk, only a few major brands will get these next-gen memory and storage parts, likely for limited-edition flagships, as the supply will be quite limited.
Samsung’s ‘Ultra’ phones do typically sell in much higher quantities than their competitors like OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi. This means that Samsung would need to allocate a lot more RAM and NAND storage to use LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 versus those other brands.
But it’s not all bad news, as the Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro for Galaxy, despite Qualcomm raising prices significantly starting on September 1. Samsung is also expected to use new rear and front cameras on the Galaxy S27 Ultra next year.
The RAM and NAND Storage shortage will really hit smartphones next year
This year, a lot of the impact from the RAM and NAND storage shortage is being felt in rising prices. But next year, it will really be a shortage. As companies will be struggling to get the appropriate RAM and storage for devices. it’s unfortunate, but it is all due to the rising popularity of AI.
Companies are buying up RAM and NAND storage in huge numbers for all of these new data centers that are being built for AI. Though most people are against these data centers, largely due to the loud noises they make 24/7. This has forced companies manufacturing RAM and NAND to focus on manufacturing enterprise-level RAM and NAND, versus the more consumer-friendly options that are used in phones, laptops, and other products.
Analysts don’t expect the situation to get better for a few years, so we’ll be sitting here in this shortage for quite some time.
