Apple is expected to release iOS 27 in the coming months. Based on Apple’s past release schedules, it will most likely be in September, close to around the time the new iPhones are being released. But if you want to stay ahead of the curve, iOS 26.6 is out now with some iOS 27 optimizations.
Apple releases iOS 26.6 update
Now, the update itself isn’t particularly exciting. It comes with some bug fixes and security updates, which are important but not exciting. There is also a fix for enterprise users. However, one of the main things in iOS 26.6 is optimizing the Spotlight index to prepare users for iOS 27.
In the past, whenever a major update was released, there were all kinds of issues being reported. This includes how it feels slower, how it seems to drain the battery more, and how the phone gets hotter. Sometimes it might be a genuine bug, but other times, it could be the phone’s software working in the background reindexing files.
If you want to avoid some of those issues, then you might want to update to iOS 26.6. This is because according to early iOS 27 beta testers, the background process could take as long as a week to complete. If not longer. By updating now, you can save yourself a lot of time when the update is eventually released. It should also make the entire update to iOS 27 a lot smoother.
But like we said, the update also contains bug fixes and security updates, so those are still worth upgrading for.
What else can we expect?
Obviously there are a bunch of changes and improvements that are part of iOS 27. However, the biggest highlight is the new and improved Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. This is part of Apple’s attempts to overhaul Apple Intelligence by working with Google and leveraging Gemini.
One thing to note is that the new Apple Intelligence and Siri aren’t powered by Gemini. Instead, Apple distilled the knowledge from Gemini to use with the Apple Foundation Models. It is still very much Apple at its core. So far, early beta testers have found massive improvements compared to before.
We’ll have to take it for a spin ourselves to get a better idea. But for now, things are looking optimistic.
