If you have ever used a Galaxy Z Flip phone, you already know their biggest daily frustration. Out of the box, Samsung users usually get stuck navigating a highly restrictive wall of basic widgets and pre-approved mini apps. However, a new leak suggests Samsung is ready to solve its biggest bottleneck design with the upcoming foldable Galaxy Z Flip 8, enabling a cover display as functional and versatile as the main one.
For years, power users looking to squeeze current productivity out of their cover screens had to jump through complex technical hoops. On older models (including the current Galaxy Z Flip 7), running any app you want required installing the MultiStar optimization module inside Samsung’s Good Lock customization suite. While this solution technically worked, it always felt like a clunky, unofficial patch rather than a refined native feature.
Ditching the widgets for true continuity
According to tech leaker Lanzuk on the Korean Naver blog (via SamMobile), the engineering team is shifting toward a much more seamless strategy. The reports state that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 will implement a unified software method allowing completely continuous use between the internal and external screens. This would mimic the layout philosophy found on the larger Galaxy Z Fold lineup.
The insider notes that the device will utilize both screens in the exact same manner, bypassing the traditional widget system. Instead of limiting you to a calendar reminder or a basic music player interface, the outer display will handle complete tasks, full-scale applications, and seamless app transitions when you fold or unfold the chassis.
This specific upgrade directly addresses the competitive pressure mounting from alternative brands. Motorola, with its Razr devices, has long earned high praise for allowing users to open almost any app on the external panel right out of the box.
The countdown to Unpacked
Beyond the major outer interface overhaul, we already have a pretty clear idea of how the physical hardware will look. The smartphone will land in at least three distinct colorways: white, graphite, and pink.
We won’t have to wait very long to see if these interface adjustments hold up in the real world. Samsung has officially locked in its next flagship Galaxy Unpacked launch event for July 22. There, the tech giant will pull back the curtain on the Galaxy Z Flip 8 alongside the premium Galaxy Z Fold 8, the new Fold 8 Ultra, and a refreshed lineup of smartwatches.
