Due to the ongoing DRAM crisis, Apple has decided to lower its demand for the standard iPhone 17. This is according to a leak from China, where the iPhone 17 is manufactured.
The account Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, which has correctly leaked a few other tidbits in the past, has said that some production lines for the standard iPhone 17 this week shifted from an earlier 15% reduction to plans to suspend roughly one-third of their capacity. The leaker also claims that Apple made a “very serious” internal assessment of the impact that the higher hardware costs are going to have on demand.
This isn’t something that Apple would ever come out and confirm, but it is getting to that time of the year where Apple would start reducing manufacturing of last year’s iPhones. Though this year is a bit different, because Apple is not putting out an iPhone 18 this year. That won’t be coming until next Spring. So the iPhone 17 is going to be sold in the main lineup for an extra 6 months.
The Android Headlines Take
The DRAM crisis is going to have a major effect on the industry. And it won’t be just about phones. However, with Apple essentially forced to increase prices on the iPhone this year, that will definitely affect how many people upgrade.
Apple has already raised prices on virtually every product it sells, except the iPhone and Apple Watch. Those price increases we expect to be seen in September when the new models are announced. This will affect how many people upgrade through the iPhone Upgrade Program, since prices are going up, and therefore people’s monthly payment on their iPhone will also be going up.
Apple won’t be the only one raising prices on phones. Samsung and Google are most likely raising prices on their new products, which will be launched before the iPhone.
