More brands could be consolidating as OPPO has done with its sub-brands OnePlus and realme. This is according to tipster Yogesh Brar over on X, who says there is “one more brand that may get absorbed by the parent brand soon…” though he is not yet naming names.
He also says that their numbers are not looking good. And that’s ultimately what happened with OnePlus and realme, even though realme was growing pretty substantially over the past couple of years. OPPO still decided it was better to merge all three brands together.
OnePlus hasn’t technically shut down; the company has been winding down operations in the US and Europe, while remaining in India (somewhat) and, of course, in China. India is only going to get mid-range devices now, however, while the flagships will remain in China. The big reason for the pullback is the market share. In the US, OnePlus never really had a large market share, and in Europe it’s been dwindling. Of course, the ban in Germany didn’t help. Over in India, OnePlus’ market share has dropped by 30% each of the last two years, dwindling away to almost nothing.
The Android Headlines Take
When it comes to a brand being absorbed by their parent company, two brands come to mind. One is IQOO, which is vivo’s sub-brand and is mostly targeting China and India. Though IQOO hasn’t done particularly well in India. A big part of this is just how competitive India is, even more so than China.
The other brand would be Xiaomi absorbing either Redmi or POCO, or potentially both. POCO has been releasing a lot of phones that mirror the Xiaomi brand lately, which is a little bit confusing and very similar to what OnePlus and OPPO did. Xiaomi as a whole, when you include Redmi and POCO, has been floundering over the past year or so, especially in their bigger markets like India.
So what will this mean for the consumer? Not a lot. These brands will get absorbed, so you’ll be missing out on the brand name, but the phones will be mostly the same as before. Maybe some different designs, logos on the back, etc. But as far as IQOO and vivo go, the software is the same. Just like it is for Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO. Right now, this is just a rumor, which may or may not turn out to be accurate.
