Google is reportedly developing a cloud-free automatic PC backup feature integrated within Quick Share. It appears that the company wants to further improve the backup situation. We’ve recently seen per-app cloud backup controls. This new solution will work via Wi-Fi when your phone and PC are on the same network. Thanks to the latest version of the Google Play Services, new info about this feature has now come to light.
Google’s upcoming automatic PC backup through Quick Share may exclude Samsung phones
Folks at Android Authority, while digging through the Google Play Services v26.26.33 release, have managed to activate the info page for Google’s PC-based backup solution. This sheds light on what the feature can do when it becomes available. The description from the page suggests that this will back up files you select directly to your PC, without costing anything. It doesn’t even need any cloud storage.
You will need to go into the Quick Share app on your Windows PC to start the process. Both your phone and Windows PC must login into the same Google Account. You will be able to select photos and videos on your phone that you’d like to back up. The solution will back up daily when your phone and PC are on and nearby, and are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Not available yet, but it’s coming
While that’s a neat solution for your storage sorrows, what’s surprising is that the screenshot explicitly says “Samsung phones aren’t supported.” This is big considering Galaxy phones represent a significant share of the Android market. While the text in the image doesn’t mention any reason for exclusion, it could be Samsung’s Smart Switch app. It already offers extensive backup options, including to Windows PCs, Macs, and even USB flash drives. But then, Smart Switch doesn’t currently support automatic backups.
Since the page only mentions Samsung devices, it’s safe to assume that this will work with other Android phones. The “Learn more” link in the page directs to the Quick Share app website. However, there’s no mention of automatic PC-based backups. It’s also not clear when the feature will debut, but we’ll keep an eye out.
