Over the years, Google Keep has developed a loyal community by keeping things incredibly simple. It’s a great place for quickly throwing together quick grocery lists, saving voice memos, sketching ideas or collaborating on shared reminders. However, despite its versatility, the app has always suffered from a frustrating limitation: you cannot easily search for a specific word within a single, lengthy note. Fortunately, this might finally change soon with a dedicated “Find in note” feature within Google Keep.
How the new search tool works
The productivity app already includes a universal search bar at the top of the main menu. If you type a specific keyword there, the app sifts through your entire library and pulls up every single list or document containing that word. The problem starts once you click on a massive note; the app leaves you completely on your own to manually scroll through walls of text just to spot the exact sentence you actually need.
The upcoming tool aims to streamline this process entirely. As spotted by the Android Authority team in the app version 5.26.271.01.90, the new option will live neatly inside the three-dot overflow menu located at the bottom-right corner of any individual document.
Selecting the tool drops down a clean search box at the top of your screen. As you type out your query, the interface instantly highlights every matching instance throughout the text. The functionality looks and feels identical to a traditional browser page search or a standard word processor interface, making it immediately intuitive.
A returning project
This is not the first time the feature has reared its head in development circles. Google was spotted experimenting with a similar in-note search function last year, only for the company to completely scrub all traces of the tool in subsequent public updates.
As the feature is currently running smoothly behind the scenes without causing crashes, the development timeline suggests an official public rollout could land sooner rather than later. However, since the tech giant has a history of shelving hidden features at the last second, a bit of cautious optimism is warranted until the update hits the Google Play Store.
The Android Headlines Take
While the arrival of this feature is great news, one can only wonder why it took so long. Searching within a note is such a useful and basic function that every note-taking app should have. The lack of options like this one forces users to stick with Keep for simple tasks and look for other alternatives for more serious work.
While Google’s “keep it simple” approach can be appealing and functional, keeping it too simple can be annoying. For example, the app still lacks features like filtering notes using multiple tags—you can set multiple tags on a note, but you can only use one tag at a time during a search. Let’s hope that Google takes its own app a little more seriously, since it has great potential.
