Apple has been releasing iPhones for close to two decades. Some models are more iconic than others, like the iPhone 4, which featured a glass back and flat edges. Then there was also the iPhone X, Apple’s first edge-to-edge display iPhone that ditched the home button in favor of Face ID. But for some reason, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has been chosen to be placed in a time capsule.
iPhone 17 Pro Max to be placed in time capsule
As part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, America250 has announced that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be placed in a time capsule and preserved for the next 250 years. It won’t be the only thing in the time capsule.
This includes letters, artifacts, records, and various objects that tell the story of the United States. This includes a handheld commemorative American flag from the 2026 Rose Parade, a Coca-Cola glass-contour bottle, sports memorabilia, student submissions, items from Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Executive Branch, and of course, the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Like we said, Apple has created several iconic iPhones over the years, so why the iPhone 17 Pro Max? According to America250, this is because the phone represents “the cutting edge of American innovation and technology in 2026. The device showcases advances in handheld computing, imaging, and connectivity that have transformed how people work, communicate, and create in the 21st century.”
Where will we be in 250 years?
That being said, we have to wonder where we will all be in 250 years. Or to be more specific, what the world will be like then. There are concerns that at the rate we’re going with environmental pollution, the world might not necessarily look like a better place that far off in the future.
Also, with all constant development going on, how will this time capsule hold up? To ensure the structural integrity, the capsule was created in the form of a precision-milled stainless steel cylinder. It also features a water and airtight compression seal made of indium. This allows it to deform when compressed to fill any imperfections when sealed.
Lastly, it is being covered by a 1,100-pound stainless steel bell jar. This creates a pocket of protective air to ensure it remains dry. Obviously none of us will be around when the time capsule is unsealed. But it will be interesting to see what the future of humanity has to say.
