Samsung beat TSMC to the punch when they were the first to release commercially available chips built on its 2nm process. But the company isn’t sitting on its hands following that victory. According to the latest reports, Samsung has resumed chip development on its 1.4nm process which could begin mass production in 2029.
Samsung resumes 1.4nm chip development for 2029
In a report from Korean publication The Bell, Samsung has resumed development for the 1.4nm chip and are reportedly targeting 2029 for mass production. It seems that the company had initially planned to begin mass production in 2027, but decided to push it back to 2029.
Instead, Samsung is focusing on improving on its 2nm yields. That decision seems to have paid off, with Tesla placing a $16.5 billion order from them. These 2nm chips will be used in Tesla’s cars, AI servers, and robotics. It’s honestly a smarter play. No point in producing 1.4nm chips when its 2nm process hasn’t recouped its investment.
Plus, there is still plenty of use and application for 2nm chips, no sense in unnecessarily rushing ahead. That being said, Samsung is getting itself ready. The report claims the company has reached out to partners such as Applied Materials and Lam Research to start producing custom chip manufacturing equipment.
Samsung’s got competition
That being said, Samsung’s got competition in the 1.4nm space. Obviously TSMC has plans to eventually launch its own 1.4nm chips as well. But they’re not alone. In case you haven’t heard, there are reports that Intel is developing its own 14A node for 1.4nm chips. In fact, a recent rumor claims that Apple could split its 1.4nm chip between both TSMC and Intel. If Apple is this confident about Intel’s ability, Samsung may have an extra competitor to worry about.Â
Intel is also rumored to begin production in 2027, while TSMC starts theirs in 2028. This means that Samsung could actually be lagging behind its rivals this time. Of course, a lot could change between now and then. Either way, we should expect to see 1.4nm become the new standard in the coming years.
