Earlier this year, Apple launched the iPhone 17e. Many were skeptical about the need for the phone, but it proved to be one of Apple’s better-selling phones of 2026. So it wasn’t a surprise to learn that the company was already planning the iPhone 18e. However, there is some bad news on that front, and that is the iPhone 18e might not come with the ProMotion display.
iPhone 18e to skip ProMotion display
This is according to a post on Weibo by tipster Digital Chat Station. The post shared some details about the displays of Apple’s upcoming iPhones. This included the iPhone 18e, in which they claim it will not come with ProMotion and will instead stick with a 60Hz display panel.
For those unfamiliar, ProMotion is Apple’s marketing term for its phones that feature a 120Hz refresh rate display. Is this decision that surprising? Not really, and here’s why. Even ahead of the iPhone 17e’s launch, there were rumors that Apple could skip the use of a 120Hz display. Apple repeating that pattern for the iPhone 18e isn’t exactly shocking.
Let’s not forget that more advanced display panels mean higher costs. Plus, with memory prices surging now, Apple needs to find ways to keep its costs down. Otherwise, it runs the risk of the so-called “budget” iPhone 18e losing its value proposition. Put that all together, and like we said, no surprises there.
Are we disappointed? A little, but then again, not everyone can tell the difference or sees the need for a 120Hz display. We got along fine with 60Hz displays for the longest time ever, so what’s one more year, right?
Digital Chat Station’s post also revealed the iPhone 18e will feature a 6.12-inch display. That is more or less the same size as its predecessor.
When is the iPhone 18e coming?
With the iPhone 17e launching this year, it’s safe to assume the iPhone 18e could come in 2027. This might explain Apple choosing a new launch strategy. The company is skipping the base iPhone 18 this year and pushing it to 2027. This means that combined with the iPhone 18e, Apple is keeping its early 2027 launch to its more budget-friendly devices. The only exception is the iPhone Air 2, which is also rumored to launch around the same time.
