LastPass has suffered another data breach, but so far this is the only breach that has happened for the service in 2026. While it might sound ridiculous to phrase it that way, it sounds less ridiculous when you factor in that this is the third data breach the company has had over the past several years where customer data was stolen. So, if you use LastPass, it’s probably worth at least considering an alternative.
That being said, LastPass is confirming that sensitive data such as banking or payment details were not stolen in the breach. If there’s any sort of silver lining, it’s that your credit and debit card information seems to be safe from this most recent incident. That’s about where the good news stops.
The first, and hopefully only LastPass data breach in 2026 includes customer addresses
While payment and banking details may not have been stolen in this breach, quite a bit of other information was reportedly accessed. This includes email addresses, physical addresses, customer names and phone numbers, support case data, and sales-related data. That’s, not great. And it should be ringing some alarm bells about personal security and privacy if you’re at all concerned with keeping your data safe.
That isn’t to say that other similar services couldn’t fall prey to the same fate. However, this is LastPass’s third major data breach. And that’s not a good look. Nor does it inspire confidence in users.
If you decide to stick with LastPass, then it goes without saying, precautions should be taken. This means changing your master password right away. It might also be worth looking into a Yubikey device and if it’s not already done, setting up two-factor authentication. These aren’t fool-proof either, but they’re more secure than not taking them. Take LastPass’s advice and stay vigilant from phishing scams and the like.
If, however, you decide it’s time to move on from LastPass, there are more than a few alternatives, and some that are very good options at that.
