Have you ever taken photos and noticed certain parts look unnaturally bright/white? That’s usually what is referred to as “blown out highlights,” something that you might notice when taking photos outdoors under direct sunlight or if you’re pointing directly at a light source. But that’s a problem the Xiaomi 18 Pro series will solve with LOFIC camera technology.
Xiaomi 18 Pro to come with LOFIC
This piece of information comes from Kartikey Singh on X. Singh has had a pretty good track record with Xiaomi-related leaks and rumors. So, there’s a good chance he could be right again. But the bigger question is, what is LOFIC, and why is it coming to the Xiaomi 18 Pro series?
Like we said earlier, blown-out highlights typically happen because the pixels in a camera sensor can only hold so much light before it “overflows.” Once the pixel hits its max capacity, it becomes pure white. That is why you might notice sometimes photos of the sky might have areas that are whiter or brighter than others. It also results in fewer details.
But with LOFIC, which stands for Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor, it is designed to address that issue. It allows each pixel to store excess electrical charge in a separate dedicated capacitor. This means that even under bright scenarios, it prevents highlight clipping. This should result in photos preserving the details in both the brightest and darkest areas at the same time.
On paper it sounds impressive, but we’ll have to wait and see how it actually handles in real life.
Potential global launch
With the Xiaomi 17 Pro series, the company opted to restrict it to the Chinese market. However, the good news is that according to Singh, he noted in another post that the Xiaomi 18 could go global. That is rather exciting to hear, as we’re sure that this LOFIC camera tech could give Xiaomi a boost in more markets. Especially since we’ve been seeing a lot of camera advancements from other Chinese OEMs like OPPO and Vivo.
In other rumors, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is rumored to feature dual 200MP cameras, while the Xiaomi 18 Pro’s rear display could also see a size upgrade.
