Google is reportedly going to be adding a videos tab to Google Discover for Android devices, making it possible to not only find online news articles, but watch videos straight from this feed. At least, you’ll presumably be able to watch videos from the feed. It’s also highly likely that Discover will simply list these videos like it does with news articles, and not actually play them in the feed itself. Merely giving users a one-stop shop for recommended videos across different social channels and platforms.
That being said, imagine, for a moment, how convenient it would be to scroll through Google Discover and watch videos right there. Of course, this presents another problem, one that comes up for the publications or creators where those videos come from. The diversion of traffic. Much like with AI overviews taking the information from written content, a video tab in Discover could pose the same problem if videos are played in the feed without having to visit the webpage. That’s neither here nor there though, at least at this point, because there’s no conformation yet on how this all works.
The Google Discover videos tab is not yet active and hasn’t rolled out officially
If you’re looking for this feature on your own device, you won’t find it yet. That’s because it’s not currently active. Android Authority was able to activate it by digging around in the Google app’s most recent version, however, and that’s how it was able to see what the new tab looks like. This was first rumored at the end of last month, but now it’s possible to see the design.
Since things aren’t functional, it’s not clear how videos will work in the tab or what kinds of videos will actually show up there. The tab icon will be located toward the top of the feed with a little play button, so it’ll be obvious that the t is for videos. It’s also officially called video mode, Android Authority says.
