Before the US government slammed the brakes on Huawei’s operations in the US, the company was making massive in-roads, especially with its camera tech. While Huawei still makes the headlines, losing access to Western markets does limit its reach somewhat. But now, it looks like Huawei could be working on new multi-camera fusion technology that might make the world sit up and pay attention again.
Huawei developing new multi-camera fusion tech
According to a post on Weibo by tipster Digital Chat Station, they claim Huawei is reportedly developing new multi-camera fusion tech that could find its way into the company’s 2027 Pura smartphones. Note that the tipster didn’t mention Huawei specifically. Instead, they claimed it was one of China’s top 5 brands. But there are some who speculate that this could be Huawei.
But what is multi-camera fusion? In simplified terms, it’s a tech, which in theory, would be able to combine data from multiple cameras to produce the best possible image. For instance, the main camera sensor and the telephoto sensor would capture the same image simultaneously. Then, the details from both sensors would combine and produce a more detailed or color accurate image.
This differs from current camera tech, in which the lens you’re using is the one capturing the data. So if you’re shooting with the telephoto camera, it uses that sensor. Some phones already do implement some form of multi-camera fusion. This includes Samsung’s ProVisual Engine and Apple’s Fusion Camera, but it’s not true multi-camera fusion, at least not like what Huawei is reportedly going for.
When can we see this tech?
Assuming Digital Chat Station’s report is accurate, we might actually see it debut in 2027. This means there is a possibility it could launch inside of the Huawei Pura 100, the successor to the Pura 90.
That being said, we have no way of knowing how this imaging tech will look like in real-life. Will it necessarily produce better images? In theory, yes. However, it will depend on the computational software Huawei uses. But if the company is successful, don’t be surprised if other phone makers were to follow suit with similar tech of their own.
