It’s been rumored that Samsung could opt to use BOE for the display on the base Galaxy S27 next year, instead of its own display. This would be in an effort to keep prices from rising too much, due to the RAMpocalypse.
Chinese display suppliers have been suffering a slump in production in the first quarter of this year, due to the rising RAM prices. So, BOE is looking to maintain profitability by offering Samsung OLED units for the Galaxy S27, at a lower price than they’d have to pay for Samsung Display panels. Apparently, BOE is going to sell Samsung these panels for $5 less than Samsung Display would.
$5 per unit might not seem like a ton, but that can make or break a price increase. The base Galaxy S26 production is currently estimated at 1.3 million units for April alone. So if we assume the same amount of Galaxy S27 next year, that’s a savings of $6.5 million. And that’s just in a single month. Never mind the savings over the next six months.
Can BOE impress Samsung?
Samsung is currently testing out these BOE displays, and they need to impress Samsung to get this contract, of course. So it’s not quite set in stone yet whether BOE will be the provider of Galaxy S27 displays, though it is very likely. This could really set BOE up for success in the coming years.
If BOE does impress Samsung with its first crop of Galaxy S27 panels, this could push BOE into more high-end phones from Samsung. And really make Samsung Display compete against BOE for Samsung Mobile’s products. Which would be very interesting, to say the least.
BOE hasn’t always been known for putting out quality displays, while Samsung Display has been known for putting out the best mobile displays. So we’ll have to see how things shake up.
