Venture capitalist Mark Stevens and his wife Mary have gifted $175 million to help pay for the construction and establishment of a medical school at Santa Clara University. A partnership between the university and Sutter Health, the facility will be the first new medical school in the Bay Area in more than a century, according to Sutter Health.
The 82,000-square-foot facility is currently under construction five miles from Santa Clara University’s historic mission campus and adjacent to the Sutter East Santa Clara Campus in Silicon Valley. Down the road, on Sutter’s West Santa Clara Campus, the health system plans to open a major new 272-bed, eight-story medical center by 2031.
The Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine will combine Santa Clara University’s academic programs with Sutter Health’s clinical network to address healthcare gaps across California, the two organizations announced. The new school is undergoing a multi-year accreditation process; an opening date hasn’t been announced.
