Heads up iPhone and iPad users. It looks like Apple has released a new update for your devices, bringing it up to iOS 26.5. Unlike some updates that are focused more on minor bug fixes, this one actually brings quite a few things to the table and might be worth checking out, especially if you use Apple Maps or RCS messages.
Apple releases iOS 26.5
Perhaps the biggest change in the iOS 26.5 update is the inclusion of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) support for RCS. This means that iPhone users sending RCS messages to their Android counterparts can rest assured their messages are encrypted.
For those unfamiliar, E2EE differs from standard encryption. Standard encryption means messages sent are encrypted. This means that if it gets intercepted, the attacker won’t be able to read it. However, E2EE takes it one step further. It ensures that only the device that receives the message can decrypt it.
This not only protects it from the prying eyes of hackers, but also your carrier, Google, or Apple. The company had previously been reluctant to adopt RCS, but it eventually did. However, even then, it did not support E2EE. Apple has been working on it for a while, but it looks like it’s finally here.
We’re not sure what took Apple this long, but better late than never. Especially since apps like Instagram have removed support for it.
What else is included?
In addition to E2EE support for RCS, the update also introduces a new Pride Luminance wallpaper. Apple describes it as a wallpaper that “dynamically refracts a spectrum of colors.” There’s also an update to Apple Maps. The app will now show recommendations in Suggested Places based on recent searches and what’s trending.
This could be useful if you’re looking for new places to explore, or if you’re in a new city or country and want to find something interesting or fun. The update is available for both iOS and iPad devices. Just head on over to Settings > General > Software Update to pull it manually if you haven’t gotten the notification yet.
