Have you ever made a phone call you didn’t really want to but had to? Sometimes those conversations can be painful, difficult, and awkward. But you know what, there’s good news. REALLY, a T-Mobile MVNO, has announced a new AI clone feature that basically clones your voice to make phone calls on your behalf.
REALLY announces new AI clone feature
Now, the concept of using AI on the phone isn’t exactly new. Google actually introduced a feature like that years ago in the form of “Hold for me.” This is where the AI would wait on the call on your behalf and let you know when to speak. There were even AI features that could call restaurants and make bookings on your behalf.
However, REALLY is taking things to the next level with its AI clone feature. Basically, what it does is it clones your voice so that you can go about your day doing things while it makes phone calls for you. For example, you could be busy at work, but the AI can make calls and book restaurants or hotels on your behalf.
Speaking to Fierce, REALLY CEO Adam Lyons said, “The mission here is really important to us. We don’t think AI needs to be threatening. We think it can be seen as a good thing. Folks using their phone and being glued to the phone often forget that family and friends and nature are the important things in life. And that’s what we want to bring back. We want to bring real connection back.”
Right now, the feature is in beta. However, Lyons said the carrier is hoping to expand on its features to become more sophisticated. “The goal is to have it get more sophisticated over time. Train it to learn more and more of your preferences, how you talk differently to your boss versus your family versus your friends.”
Is this a good idea?
That being said, we have to wonder if this is really such a good idea. Yes, from a tech perspective, this is all kinds of cool. Living your life while tedious chores and tasks are being taken in the background sounds like a dream. It’s efficient and there’s really no denying it. However, the better question is, is this really a good idea?
Do you really want to be receiving a call from a family member or friend, only to realize it was a cloned AI voice, asking you out for dinner or reminding you of an upcoming event? It strips away all personality and warmth that you typically get from a human interaction. There’s efficiency and there’s this, and we’re not sure if this is necessarily better.
