The Steam Machine is one of the most highly anticipated pieces of hardware in gaming right now, which is no doubt going to make it an item that’s hard to get at the initial launch. Luckily it seems like Valve will be using the queue system for the Steam Machine just like it did with the Steam Controller.
For context, when Valve launched the Steam Controller pre-orders on May 4, the controller sold out in almost no time at all. Likely mere minutes, with several reports on forums and the official Valve and Steam accounts that buyers were met with page load and checkout errors. Of course, the Steam Controller, which Valve sells for $99.99, was victim to the scalper trend that chokes the fun out of anything these days. Minutes after pre-order stock was gone, listings were already up on eBay going for as much as four times the MSRP.
Valve then proceeded to announce a queue system for the controller going forward. The system should help stop scalpers for the most part. And it’s successful in doing so, it’s a good thing that Valve wants to do the same thing with the Steam Machine, as it will be arguably harder to get with lower supply available, and that’s going to make it more desirable for scalpers.
Valve’s queue system for the Steam Machine was kind of a given
Valve hasn’t come out said that it would be doing a queue system for the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame. However, it would make zero sense for it implement a queue for pre-orders of the Steam Controller and not the Steam Machine. In Valve’s official post about the queue, it only mentions the controller, but Valve surely knows the Steam Machine will be more sought after. So it likely wants to ensure that the people buying it want to keep it.
As reported by Wccftech, users have been analyzing the Steam Tracker code for the hardware have noticed that there are four different models of the device. This is very likely a Steam Machine without a controller in the 512GB and 2TB models, and then those same models bundled with a controller. Valve still hasn’t confirmed a release date or a price yet.
