Artificial intelligence has already shifted how developers write and debug code. However, a specific missing piece has long frustrated OpenAI users. Some competitors have allowed developers to interact with their PC-based coding agents via mobile. Meanwhile, Codex users have been patiently waiting. Well, it seems that is finally about to change with a remote-control feature for ChatGPT‘s Codex on Android devices.
The missing link
For months, developers on Reddit and GitHub have been asking for a way to manage their Codex sessions remotely. The idea is simple: you start a complex coding task on your computer and monitor or guide the AI agent using your smartphone. Until now, users had to rely on unofficial hacks or switch to other platforms like Anthropic’s Claude to get this functionality.
Recent findings in the ChatGPT Android app (version 1.2026.125) suggest that OpenAI has been paying attention. As spotted by Android Authority, several text strings hidden within the app’s code point directly to a new feature designed to bridge the gap between your phone and your desktop coding environment.
ChatGPT Codex on the go: Your phone will let you control your PC coding
The leaked information indicates that the ChatGPT app will soon act as a remote control for Codex. This would allow you to check progress, provide new instructions, or fix errors in a coding session running on your PC without being tied to your desk.
There are no images available that show the final interface in a fully functional state. However, preliminary screens suggest a native and streamlined integration (shown below). OpenAI basically seeks to offer the ability to steer the AI agent from anywhere.

Closing the competition gap
This move is a clear response to the growing popularity of “vibe coding” and autonomous agents. Developers are increasingly looking for tools that work across all their devices. With a remote-control feature, OpenAI is making Codex much more versatile for those who need to stay productive while away from their monitors.
OpenAI hasn’t officially announced a release date yet. But the presence of these strings in the latest Android build suggests that development is well underway.
