In a move that few saw coming just a few years ago, Apple and Intel have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement for Intel to manufacture some of the chips powering future Apple devices. According to the Wall Street Journal, the two companies have spent over a year in intensive negotiations to finalize this partnership.
Intel scores massive win with preliminary Apple chipmaking deal
This deal represents a massive milestone for Intel’s foundry business. The company has been trying for years to rebuild its manufacturing prowess to compete with giants like TSMC. Recovering Apple as a client allows Intel to cement its position as a key player in the high-end chipmaking industry.
The news sent Intel’s stock up by 14%. This investor reflects confidence in the new direction. Intel had already achieved important partnerships with tech giants recently. The company will produce processors for Elon Musk’s AI and robotics projects, targeting Tesla and SpaceX.
Which chips will Intel build?
The WSJ report didn’t specify which products are included. However, tipster Max Weinbach suggests a few interesting possibilities. His post says the deal could involve the A21 base chip for the upcoming iPhone 19 and 19e, or perhaps the next generation of Mac silicon, such as the M7 or M8 base chips.
Another possibility is that Intel will handle specific components, like the CPU tile, for Apple’s chiplet-based silicon. Regardless of the specific part, shifting even a portion of production to Intel is a significant diversification of Apple’s supply chain. Since the breakup between Apple and Intel many years ago, the Cupertino giant has relied heavily on Samsung and TSMC.
Why now?
The semiconductor industry is shifting. Apple has been exploring discussions with both Intel and Samsung to produce main processors. The firm likely seeks to reduce its dependence on a single manufacturer and secure more capacity for its growing lineup.
If this deal moves forward, it could change the landscape of mobile and desktop computing. We’ll have to wait to see if this gets official confirmation.
