The Steam Controller CAD files have been unleashed by Valve, so expect a deluge of custom creations from the modding community in due time. When Valve first announced the Steam Controller alongside the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, one of the coolest things about the Steam Machine was Valve’s confirmation that people would be able to create their own custom plates and things for the cube-shaped living room gaming PC.
Not only would this allow for everyone to try and find something to make their Steam Machine completely unique, but it fosters appreciation from the community because it lets people play around with things. Now, modders and accessory makers will be able to do the same thing with the Steam Controller. Doing so will require a few things, of course. You’ll need some knowledge of what to do with those CAD files. And, if you want to actually make something to physically use with the controller, you’ll probably need a 3D printer.
The Steam Controller charging puck CAD files have been released as well
In addition to the CAD files for the Steam Controller, Valve has also done the same for the Puck, the tiny little charging accessory add-on that comes with the controller. Since these have just been released it might be a tiny bit before modders have something you can actually use with either the controller or the puck. Not to mention, people have yet to receive either one since Steam Controller pre-orders only went live on May 4. Chances are people will want to test the fit of things on the actual product.
Aside from creating custom accessories or add-on, these CAD files should also allow people to 3D print custom parts for the controller if something needs to be replaced. Such as a button or a new d-pad. The CAD files have been released under a Creative Commons License, and include STP and STL files for both devices.
