Apple’s iPhone 16 series was the last time the company used titanium in the body of the device. With the iPhone 17, Apple turned back to aluminum, and they’re expected to do so for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. This has since been corroborated by tipster Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo.
iPhone 18 Pro to continue using aluminum
We can’t say we’re surprised that Apple will keep using aluminum for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Titanium, while lighter and stronger, is notoriously difficult to work with. This means that the yields compared to aluminum aren’t as high, making it unnecessarily complicated. And to be honest, most of us keep our phones in cases anyway. So it’s not like titanium provides any tangible day-to-day benefits, other than sounding nice in marketing materials.
However, the decision to keep using aluminum might be worrisome for some. This is because if you recall, the iPhone 17 Pro had some paint chipping issues. While the phone itself was durable overall, the paint chipping isn’t something you’d expect from a $1,000 device.
Plus, there were later reports that the Cosmic Orange version of the iPhone 17 Pro experienced a weird color shifting. This turned the phone’s orange finish into something that resembles rose gold or pink. In any case, we can only hope that Apple has learned from this and might have found a better way to prevent that from happening.
Design to remain largely the same
So, with the continued use of aluminum, it cements the rumors that the design of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max won’t change too much from its predecessors. Based on leaked dummy units and rumors, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will largely resemble last year’s iPhones. In fact, it seems that the newer models might even fit in some cases designed for older models.
That doesn’t mean it will be completely identical. The most notable change might be Dynamic Island. Recent leaked photos show a considerably smaller Dynamic Island. This means it won’t eat into the screen as much, but we have to wonder if it could impact its functionality.
Also, Apple is expected to make the cameras slightly bigger. We might also get new color options, which apparently will be called “Dark Cherry.”
