Google is rolling out the May 2026 security patch for Android 16 for all eligible Pixel devices. This will likely be the final build before the transition to Android 17 later this month. The update targets bug fixing and improving security instead of including flashy new features.
Which Google Pixel devices are getting the May 2026 security update?
The rollout covers the Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, and the original Pixel Fold, extending through the entire Pixel 8, 9, and 10 series, including the recently released Pixel 10a. Notably, older models like the Pixel 6 and 7 series are missing from the list.
For most users, the update carries the build number CP1A.260505.005. Google plans to deploy the software in phases over the next several weeks. Users can manually check for it via their system settings or flash the factory images if they prefer, though.
Key fixes and improvements
Based on information shared by Google, the May patch addresses several specific user frustrations.
Starting with battery, there’s a fix for a bug that caused slow wireless charging when the battery level was between 75% and 80%. This particular fix applies to all models compatible with the latest firmware.
For the camera section, the update resolves an issue where the Camera app would freeze once users tried to change the zoom while recording video. The base Google Pixel 10 model was the model affected by this bug.
Display-wise, the OTA eliminates a persistent flickering white dot at the top of the screen. It also corrects instances where the display would appear fuzzy or frozen. These bugs were present in the Google Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL.
Last but not least, there’s a fix for the occasional “misaligned keyboard” issue within certain apps that affected all Pixel devices.
Important security note for Pixel 10 users
If you are a Pixel 10 series user, you should be aware of a specific security measure included in this patch. The update includes a bootloader increment that prevents the device from rolling back to older, potentially vulnerable Android 16 builds. Once you install the May 2026 update on a Pixel 10 device, you will not be able to flash or boot previous versions.
Google already announced the date of the upcoming I/O 2027. There we will get all the details about the improvements in the first stable version of Android 17.
