After buying a nearly shuttered factory, semiconductor fabricator Lumentum is transitioning into production mode with the help of a $610 million investment to outfit the fab with new equipment. Lumentum will use the Greensboro fab for lasers, modules and optical subsystems. The customer for the fab is chip maker giant Nvidia.
Lumentum intends to add 400 to 500 people over two or more years to get the fab fully operational.
The Triad Business Journal reports Lumentum acquired the fab at 7908 Piedmont Triad Parkway, which Qorvo announced last year it was shutting down as it moves production to a Texas site. Qorvo had intended to mothball the 240,000-square-foot facility, which it has used to fabricate semiconductor devices used primarily in smartphones.
