Google is adding a new change to its TV platform that may not appease everyone. In an upcoming update, Google TV will enable YouTube Shorts recommendations directly on the home screen of the TV. While the new change aims to redesign its TV platform for evolving needs and increase interactivity, adding Shorts video directly on the homescreen feels out of place, especially on the large screens.
YouTube Shorts are coming soon to the Google TV homescreen
The upcoming software update will place YouTube Shorts recommendations directly on the home screen of the Google TV platform. The short videos will be visible alongside movies, regular YouTube content, and shows. Google has also shared a preview image that reveals a new row titled “Short videos for you.” It appears right above the “Trending on Google” section. The placement of the new row makes it quite noticeable.

Talking further about the design, each row features six short videos at a time. It also features the creators’ names, video titles, and the total likes count. The recommendations will be personalized. Though Google has not confirmed if the YouTube viewing habits will be used for recommendations or the broader platform activity. Basically, the new addition aims to make it easier for users to access growing, easy-to-consume short-form video content.
It will roll out to US users later this year
Google has confirmed that the new update carrying the YouTube Shorts recommendations support will roll out to Google TV across the United States later this year. However, the tech giant has not confirmed whether the user will be able to manually turn off the recommendation or not. It has also not shared any details about the global release of the update, making it uncertain if other regions will get the new addition or not.
Hopefully, Google will include an option to turn off the recommendations. Not everyone wants to view the short-form video content on their TV, and that too, directly on the home screen. Large screens are best utilized for viewing landscape videos and shows.
