Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently revealed that Apple’s product portfolio might see six new product categories. The list of devices that are under development includes AI AirPods, smart glasses, a pendant, a smart display, a tabletop robot, and a security camera. While there have been rumors about some, the latter two are totally new. Beyond the six categories, we have fresh updates on two highly anticipated Apple projects: AR Glasses and a foldable iPad.
New report brings Apple’s AR glasses and foldable iPad updates
Talking about Augmented Reality glasses (AR), Gurman notes that the goal is to create lightweight glasses with AR, which overlay digital information over real-world views. This will reportedly have a form factor that could “ultimately” replace the iPhone. He adds that Apple wants to launch the device between 2028 and 2030.
On the other hand, Gurman says that Apple has been working on a “roughly” 20-inch foldable iPad. Interestingly, this device has been a “Ternus priority.” However, it may ultimately remain an experimental concept that never reaches the market, says Gurman, citing several people who have worked on it.
The foldable iPad’s future remains unclear
These are noteworthy updates on two Apple products, which we haven’t heard about much in recent months. It seems like the launch timeline for Apple’s AR glasses is still uncertain. However, the possibility of a 2028 launch is encouraging. In the meantime, Apple will reportedly unveil AI smart glasses, likely later this year or early 2027. It’s believed that the company’s progress on these smart glasses may have led to breakthroughs that make a 2028 AR glasses launch possible. However, it’s just an assumption at this point.
Then there’s the foldable iPad. Previously, it was reported that the launch was delayed from the late 2026 launch window to possibly 2028. The fresh report sounds like its future still remains unclear, since several sources told Gurman that they don’t think it will ever ship. That said, the foldable iPad being “Ternus priority” is particularly interesting. If the iPhone Ultra does well for Apple, Ternus might speed up the foldable iPad development.
