If you have not subscribed to a YouTube Premium subscription, you probably have made peace with watching ads in videos. While that’s understandable, some users are now reporting abnormal behaviour after watching the ad. It seems that a weird YouTube bug is causing videos to jump ahead after users skip an ad.
Users report a YouTube bug causing videos to jump ahead after they skip an ad
After watching an ad, either by skipping (after the set timer) or watching it entirely, YouTube should ideally start the video at that exact point. However, users are reporting that videos jump ahead anywhere from 30 seconds to around a minute after they finish watching ads. It seems the exact amount of time skipped varies by affected user.
Complaints about this issue have been popping up on Reddit and Google support platforms. A Reddit user “Omega636” says the video jumps between 10 and seconds into the clip after watching the ad. Another user, “4572492730870474498,” over on Google’s community forum notes seeing their videos starting 40 seconds in after skipping ads.
On the Google support thread, a user reports noticing the same problem on iOS after a 5-second ad, whether they skip it or watch it to completion. This is most certainly a bug, and going by the number of comments to these reports, it seems to be widespread. Considering how often ads come on now, this can be really annoying.
More issues reported
Interestingly, Reddit posts note other issues as well, where the screen shrinks before ads, a sticky tab reappears after each ad, and videos being forced into vertical mode after interacting with a vertical ad. It seems that scrubbing through videos using the double-tap feature causes the video to freeze or the audio to desync. This often requires the app to be closed entirely and cleared from recent apps.
Another user pointed out that the video timer keeps running even when playback freezes. This suggests that the player is losing sync during the ad transition. Google hasn’t acknowledged the issue of videos jumping ahead after ads yet. We hope the company sorts this out soon.
