Google Play Store offers a separate hub for Games via a bottom tab. This section lists game recommendations, top chats, other devices, and more. However, filtering a game by genre requires more taps/scrolls than it should. For what it’s worth, there’s a ‘Category’ section all the way at the end, but it’s not immediately visible. To address that, Google might be making some UI changes to the Play Store Games tab. We’re also getting a glimpse of it.
Google is reportedly testing a Play Store Games tab UI change to improve discovery
In a new, but unspecified, version of the Google Play Store, folks over at Android Authority (based on a tip by user Gzx) have spotted some UI changes to the top navigation bar. The new UI shows Material 3 Expressive-like bubbles for game genres such as Simulation, Puzzle, Life, and more. As usual, Top Chats remains the first tab on this horizontal list, based on the screenshot shared.
It’s worth noting that these options are already available in the Categories tab in the current UI. But with this change, it seems Google wants to save gamers a step. This new layout replaces the current outdated layout, which includes options like For You, Top Chats, Other Devices, Children, Premium, and finally, Categories.

More visibility to game genres
This change gives game genres more visibility right off the bat and should make the Play Store much easier to navigate for gamers. It’s not clear where these legacy tabs will be placed, as they’re not seen in the new UI. It’s unlikely that Google will ditch these options entirely. There are chances that this could be an early implementation of the upcoming design update, and these missing sections may return again in a later version. It’s not clear when this redesign will begin rolling out, but we’ll update if and when that happens.
