When it comes to Android phones, the Ultra models of smartphones always come with whatever the top chipsets are, but usually so do the other models of the same phone, at least for some manufacturers. Samsung, for example, is using the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in all three versions of the Galaxy S26. Not just the Galaxy S26 Ultra. However, this sort of thing could potentially change. Not necessarily from Samsung, but from some phone OEMs.
The latest rumor about chipsets claims that a combination of factors is forcing smartphone makers to reserve the top chipsets for ultra models of phones. That would mean that if you want the best chipset that provides the most performance and the most features, you’ll need to pay for the most expensive model. It’s worth remembering that this is just a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt for now. As there are currently no supporting details. Given the reasoning, however, it’s still a possible scenario.
Top chipsets for smartphones will be reserved for Ultra models because of TSMC and the RAM shortage
While the claims haven’t been verified or confirmed yet, the reasons given for these changes do make sense. According to Digital Chat Station on Weibo (via Wccftech) states that TSMC is a main driving factor in manufacturers reserving top chips for Ultra models. Specifically, TSMC’s 2nm chip crunch. Adding to this is the RAM shortage which has been negatively affecting just about every corner of the consumer electronics industry.
DCS says that TSMC’s 2nm wafer production is still at an insufficient number, so smartphone OEMs are having to start implementing the use of lower grade chipsets to meet the demand. This does line up with rumors about multiple chipset models from the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek. So with that in mind, customers may start to see slight differences from smartphone models towards the end of the year or early next year.
